Petroleum market shares: historical report on sales of propane to ultimate consumers, 1972 through 1974
Data provided by over 4,000 refiners and independent marketers of propane and propane-butane mixes, are summarized for the period January 1972 through December 1974. Companies surveyed accounted for over 90% of the propane produced and/or imported by the United States in 1974 as reported by the Bureau of Mines. Between 1972 and 1974, the market share of refiner sales of propane to ultimate consumers decreased 2%, nonbranded independent marketers' share increased 2%, and branded independent marketers' share remained constant. ... Nationally, the total sales of propane to ultimate consumers decreased 5% between 1972 and 1974. Sales to ultimate consumers in the Northeastern States increased 39 million gallons (5% above 1972 sales), and decreased 521 million gallons (6% below 1972 sales) throughout the rest of the country. The largest overall sales reduction of over 257 million gallons (8% below 1972 sales) occurred in the North Central States. Reduced propane supply in 1974 resulted from (1) reductions in the production of natural gas from which propane is produced, and (2) reductions in increasingly high priced imports. The market experienced increased demand for propane as a substitute fuel in applications affected by natural gas curtailments and decreased demand by petrochemical, residential, and commercial sectors. ...
