An investigation was made of the optical spectra of yttrium gallium garnet. The reflectivity was measured in the wavelength range 800--45 nm and the transmission was measured in the region of the absorption edge. A Kramers--Kronig analysis of the reflectivity spectrum was used to calculate the spectral dependence of the optical constants, permittivity, ''optical'' conductivity, electron energy loss function, and effective numbers of free electrons contributing to the optical properties and plasma oscillations. A discussion is given of the observed spectra and they are compared with the spectra of the isostructural yttrium iron garnet. (AIP)
