Economics of the mineral industries

The objective of this volume is to enhance the mutual understanding between the perspectives of economists and mineral engineers on problems of the mineral industries. To accomplish this task a series of articles written by 41 specialists is presented. The economic role of minerals is examined in Part One, which provides an overview of the role of minerals in the developing countries and in the modern industrial countries, and a discussion of international trade of minerals. A chapter is also included on the history of the monetary metals, gold and silver. Part Two considers the economic analysis problems involved in the study of minerals, and includes sections on mineral supply, mineral industry demand, and the application of quantitative economic techniques to the mineral industries. The functions and structure of the mineral industry are described in the third part. Four chapters in this part review the technology, the market structure, the problems of financing, and mineral properties of the industry. These specific commodities or commodity groups are treated separately: Fuels (coal, oil and gas, and nuclear energy materials and their utilization); Metals; and Nonmetallics. Part Four, Public Policy and the Mineral Industry, looks at mineral law; taxation; conservation and environmental protection; government controls of competition; policies for mineral development and trade; and health, safety, and labor issues. The development of mineral economics as a profession is traced in Part Five, which also investigates the future of the study of mineral economics, and minerals and man's future. The final part presents statistical commodity data. (BYB)
