The fuel cell for use by the electric utility industry has reached a critical stage, where funding in large amounts will be required to bring it to full fruition. This means there will be a need for government aid to produce, as the next step, a 26-MW commercial modular system, according to William L. Lueckel, manager of fuel-cell programs, Power Systems Div., United Technologies Corp. It has been reported that the electric and gas industries and United Technologies have invested about $100-million to date in fuel-cell development. A group of nine large electric utilities will have invested $37-million in UT's so-called FCG-1 program by 1977 to get a 1-MW self-contained prototype unit into operation this year. In addition, UT has been putting up $1 for every $2 the utilities put into the FCG-1 program.
