A Wankel engine is designed with a main chamber and a prechamber substantially smaller than the main chamber. A lean air-fuel mixture is delivered to the main chamber while a rich air-fuel mixture is supplied to the prechamber section. The rich air-fuel mixture in the prechamber is ignited, creating a pressure differential which causes hot combustion gases in prechamber to flow through a gas transfer port and ignite the lean air-fuel mixture in the main chamber.
