Three different cleaning processes are described for Ti and Ti-alloy surfaces prior to chemical milling, joining, plating, fabrication, or any process where foreign substances would be undesirable. Greases, oils, and lubricants may be removed by alkaline or emulsion soak-type cleaners and electrolytic cleaning systems. Mechanical descaling methods mentioned are sandblasting, shot blasting, and vapor blasting. Following shot or abrasive blasting, acid pickling may be required to ensure complete removal of metallic iron, oxide, scale, or other surface contaminants. Various methods of acid pickling and descaling procedures are described briefly. (BLM)
