Rate-equation dynamics of passively mode-locked quasicontinuous lasers: Perturbation theory of a ring laser

The initial build-up of mode locking in a passively mode-locked quasicontinuous laser is studied theoretically. A ring cavity which contains a composite medium exhibiting saturable amplification, saturable absorption, and linear losses is analyzed in the rate-equation approximation by means of a perturbation technique. Conditions for mode locking are derived and compared with the results obtained from similar models employed by other authors. Computer solutions are presented which are in good agreement both with the theoretical analysis and with experimental findings. The applicability of the theory to lasers having the conventional two-mirror configuration is briefly considered. (AIP)
