Two future escape routes are presented--one in which unlimited energy sources allow ever-increasing material prosperity, and one in which man accepts the finitude of natural resources and adjusts his consumption and expectations accordingly. The problem of maintaining the spiritual strength of mankind and developing a level of wisdom indicates the second choice might be preferable. Although increased energy consumption by the industrial countries may deplete fossil fuel energy sources before pollution destroys the environment, it is time to be planning for a stabilized population and reduced energy consumption with development of renewable sources of energy. A review of the history of energy consumption, the philosphy of relating energy to gross national product, the extent of fossil fuel resources, and the problems of nuclear energy leads to the conclusion that solar energy, combined with reduced energy consumption, will be the only clean and unlimited energy alternative.
