The residue from the burning of coal, collected from the stack effluent and the bottom of the boiler unit, is another solid waste disposal product that the community must be concerned with. Since 1940 more than 300 million tons of this coal ash has been generated, of which only about 30% has been utilized. In this study the nature of coal ash has been defined, the quantities produced have been determined and locations of the major utilities generating the coal ash changes and quantities to be generated in the future resulting from expanded energy requirements, advancements in technology and pollution controls have been evaluated. This study also included a review of current disposal and utilization practices. (GRA)
