This is the first comprehensive study since the nationwide energy emergency began of the way patterns of supply and demand for energy in New York City affect the city's environment. Discussed are the growth of energy demand and the reduction in supply in the metropolitan region; the distinct patterns of energy flow in large cities; ways that building codes, transportation patterns, appliance taxes, etc. can be used to reduce demand; alternative untapped sources of fuel for New York, including refuse, waste oil, and offshore oil and gas; prospect for conversion facilities such as refineries and coal gasification plants being built in the region; use of pricing policies, antitrust actions, excess profits taxes, and other economic means to help the energy situation and reduce economic burdens on the poor.
