Excitation of infrared auroral emissions in collisions of H/sup +/ and H with N/sub 2/. Interim report. [0. 5 to 25 keV: cross sections]

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7362309

Cross sections for emission of the N/sub 2//sup +/ (A /sup 2/..pi../sub u/ -- X /sup 2/..sigma../sub g//sup +/) Meinel (2,0) and the (B /sup 3/..pi../sub g/ -- A /sup 3/..sigma../sub u//sup +/) first-positive (1P) (3,1) bands in 0.5 to 25 keV H/sup +/ and H impact on N/sub 2/ are reported. It is shown that, in a hydrogen aurora, H/sup +/ and H impact make comparable contributions to the Meinel band intensity, but that neutral hydrogen impact is the predominant source of 1P emission. The vibrational distribution of N/sub 2//sup +/ A /sup 2/..pi../sub u/formed in 25-keV H/sup +/ and H impact with v' = 2 to 5 is shown to be in good agreement with the prediction of a simple, Franck--Condon model.
