Apparatus and method for cooling a superconducting cable

An arrangement for cooling an electric cable is presented that is comprised of deep-cooled inner and outer conductors at high voltage and zero potential, respectively, and is provided with cable termination, in which the inner and outer conductors are connected with respective inner and outer ordinary conductors. The invention consists of the provision that separate cooling loops with a common coolant supply unit are associated with the inner and outer ordinary conductors, and that likewise separate cooling loops with a common return and a further common coolant supply unit are associated with the inner and outer conductors. In this arrangement, the heat losses produced can be removed to the coolant supply units with relatively high efficiency.
