Preparation of high surface area substituted LaMnO/sub 3/ catalysts

Perovskite catalysts in the LaMnO/sub 3/ family have been produced with A site substitutions of Sr, Pb, K and Ce, and with B site substitutions of Ni, Co, Li and Mg from nitrate solutions by freeze drying, spray drying and precipitation. Freeze drying in some cases gave a single phase perovskite at a lower temperature than the other techniques. Substitution of the cations Sr or K for La in LaMnO/sub 3/ produced catalysts with the highest conversion rates. Freeze dried La/sub 0.5/ Sr/sub 0.5/MnO/sub 3/ had the highest surface area (due, in part, to lower temperature heat treatments) and the highest device activity of the group. B site modifiers (Li and Mg) produced active catalysts but also diluted available active sites. Substitution of Ni for Mn gives highly active catalysts while similar substitutions of Co for Mn show less activity.
