Title: Oxidation of silicide coatings on niobium and its alloys VN-2 and VN-3

Journal Article · · Prot. Met. (USSR) (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:7361640

The kinetics of silicized Nb alloy oxidation were investigated. It was found that the relatively low heat resistance of silicide coatings on niobium and VN-2 and VN-3 alloys at 1200 to 1400/sup 0/C is due to the formation of the higher niobium oxide Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/ during oxidation, in addition to amorphous silica. The stage-by-stage character of the oxidation of coated samples is associated with the formation (under the oxide film) of a heterophase zone comprising a mixture of higher and lower niobium silicides. The presence of microcracks has a considerable influence on the oxidation process at 1400/sup 0/C.
