The performance characteristics of the ram airbreathing laser (RAL) were evaluated for a wide variety of conditions. The RAL is an adaptation of the airbreathing laser (ABL) and utilizes atmospheric air and the ram effect to produce high pressure, high temperature air at the combustion chamber. Benzene is used to raise the air temperature from 1400 to 2500/sup 0/K. The vibrational nonequilibrium flow in the nozzle and laser cavity was evaluated for the CO/sub 2/--N/sub 2/--H/sub 2/O--O/sub 2/ gas mixture to determine the small signal gain and maximum available energy. Significantly high levels of small signal gain and maximum available energy are available to provide high levels of specific power output.
