Negative formation cross sections have been determined for dissociative collisions of H/sub 2/ /sup +/, H/sub 3/ /sup +/, and HD/sub 2/ /sup +/ in H/sub 2/, He, and Xe in the energy region from 40 to 600 keV. In addition, the maximum and equilibrium H/sup -/ or D/sup -/ fractions for the three molecular ions in H/sub 2/ gas were determined. For equivelocity incident HD/sub 2/ /sup +/ and H/sub 3/ /sup +/, D/sup -/ or H/sup -/ formation cross sections were the same. For H/sub 2/ /sup +/ the H/sup -/ formation cross sections were smaller than those of the triatomic incident beams for velocities greater than 3.3 x 10/sup 8/ cm/sec. Equilibrium fractions were independent of the incident particle at equal velocities and were 0.024 at 2 x 10/sup 8/ cm/sec. (AIP)
