Engineering of wind energy systems

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7359086

The engineering of wind energy systems is analyzed from the point of view of component selection and performance assessment. Combinations of two load types (variable and constant speed) and three turbine types connected by a fixed-gear-ratio transmission constitute the various systems investigated. The three turbine types result from introducing the notions of nested, unnested, and hybrid power coefficients suggested by current performance characteristics of American Multiblade, Darrieus, and Darrieus/Savonius turbines. The engineering problems associated with these systems are discussed qualitatively, emphasizing the nature, magnitude, and variability of the problems. 11 references. (auth)
