Low frequency radio observations of the solar wind near the moon

The RAE-2 lunar orbiter often measures sporadic 20--40 dB intensity increases in the frequency range of 25--110 kHz. Numerous examples of the disappearance of this intense noise during occultations of the sun have been observed. The average position of these occultations coincides with the average location of the plasma cavity above the nightside of the moon. We suggest that the observed high noise levels may be generated near the spacecraft by a disturbed solar wind electron population in the vicinity of the moon. (AIP)
