Underground coal operators getting new ''tools for the trade:'' longwalling can put new face on productivity

Journal Article · · Coal Age; (United States)

The longwall and mining method has been developed (and used extensively) in the United Kingdom, Germany and Russia. Although introduced into the U.S. in 1960, growth has been slow up to the present. But with plans for new coal mines and expansions and an American manufacturer (Joy Mfg. Co.) progress may accelerate. Various systems used in foreign countries are described in some detail. The equipment is quite expensive initially but in many situations results in high productivity. (LTN)
