Study of surface flashover of conical insulators using 3 ns risetime pulses

Conference ·
OSTI ID:7357626

Polymethyl methacrylate (Plexiglas) insulators in the form of truncated cones were subjected in vacuum (10/sup -3/ to 10/sup -4/ Pa pressure) to high-voltage pulses having 3 ns risetime. The relationship between breakdown voltage, cone angle, and time delay prior to breakdown was as expected if flashover is due to a secondary electron emission avalanche at the insulator surface. Evidence was also obtained that insulators of conventional design may be subject to an anode-initiated surface flashover mechanism.
