Test management of air conditioning. [Arkansas Power and Light Co]

Tests in which residential central air-conditioning units were cycled off and on by remote control indicate that as much as 4.17 kW of coincident demand per unit could be dropped during peak load conditions. This compares favorably with the figure of 1.4 kW that was found as the average deferrable load per water heater. Another conclusion was that unacceptable temperature increases resulting from air-conditioning cutoffs apparently limit such downtime to 25 percent or less. Consequently only 12.5 percent of total residential on-peak load can be dropped, because only half the total air-conditioning load is controllable. The tests, performed by Arkansas Power and Light Co. are discussed.
