High-temperature corrosion in gas turbines and steam boilers by fuel impurities. Part VIII. Evaluation of the effects of manganese, calcium, and several heavy metals on corrosion and slag formation

Manganese was found to contribute to corrosion in Na/sub 2/SO/sub 4/--V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ melts and did not inhibit corrosion by forming higher melting compounds. Manganese also interfered with the corrosion inhibiting effects of magnesium and silicon. Calcium inhibited Na/sub 2/SO/sub 4/--V/sub 2/O/sub 5/ corrosion and the calcium--aluminium--silicon combination had good sodium tolerance. Calcium systems formed tenacious slags that detract from their corrosion inhibiting effectiveness. Measurements on the rare earth oxide mixtures, on zirconium, and on cerium did not indicate any corrosion inhibiting properties for these systems. (MCG)
