Oscillator strength of the barium 6s6p /sup 1/P/sub 1/ -- 6s5d /sup 1/D/sub 2/ transition inferred from photodeflection efficiency

The oscillator strength of the 6s6p /sup 1/P/sub 1/ -- 6s5d /sup 1/D/sub 2/ transition in barium has been inferred from the efficiency of laser deflection of an atomic beam. The result, f < or = 0.0034, is a large correction to the previously accepted experimental value of f = 0.1, although it agrees reasonably well with recent theoretical work. (AIP)
