Unnatural parity levels at high excitation in /sup 20/Ne

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., C; (United States)
..gamma.. decaying states at high excitation in /sup 20/Ne have been studied via the /sup 12/C(/sup 12/C, ..cap alpha gamma..)/sup 20/Ne reaction in an attempt to identify new unnatural parity levels in /sup 20/Ne. In addition to ..gamma.. ray decay schemes, accurate measurements of the ratio of cross sections at average scattering angles of 12/sup 0/ and 1/sup 0/ were made, and the combination of a strong ..gamma.. decay mode and vanishing cross section at 0/sup 0/ were taken as the signature of an unnatural parity level. Previously suggested unnatural parity levels at 9.88 +- 0.03, 10.69 +- 0.02, 11.56 +- 0.02, and 11.67 +- 0.03 MeV have been confirmed, and limits on their spins and parities have been established from the ..gamma.. ray decay schemes. The results are compared with shell model calculations. (AIP)
