Response time of solar collectors

Journal Article · · Sol. Energy; (United States)
A heat transfer model is described for predicting the transient behavior of a multiple-cover solar collector. A single design parameter is obtained called the response time to characterize the transient response of the collector. The response time is defined as the time taken for the temperature rise of the absorber plate to reach 90% of the final steady rise, when the collector is subjected to a step change in the solar radiation level. From this definition it is seen that the response time will be proportional to the time taken for the instantaneous efficiency of the collector to reach 90% of the steady operating value. (WDM)
