Halogen hydrates

Patent ·
OSTI ID:7355650

A method is described for producing electric current from an electrical energy storage device having an electrode compartment containing a positive electrode, a negative electrode comprised of a metallic surface which will combine electrochemically with a halogen, and an ion-permeable diaphragm mounted between the positive electrode and the negative electrode so as to provide a positive electrode compartment and a negative compartment. The method comprises the following steps: circulating an aqueous metal halide electrolyte solution sequentially past the negative electrode in the electrode compartment, externally of the electrode compartment, and back past the negative electrode; circulating an aqueous metal halide electrolyte solution sequentially past the positive electrode in the electrode compartment, externally of the positive electrode compartment, and back past the positive electrode; decomposing a halogen hydrate, thereby producing its thermal decomposition products, namely, halogen and water; passing the decomposition products into the electrolyte from the positive electrode compartment while it is circulating external to the electrode compartment, thereby dissolving at least a portion of halogen from the halogen hydrate; and completing the circuit between the positive and negative electrodes.
