Changes in static strength relative to the magnitude, sign, and distribution of the residual stresses were studied in the hard alloys VK15 and VK20. Machining was used to produce surface stresses; annealing was used to eliminate interphase microstresses in the interior. It is concluded that high strength is produced when both residual interphase stresses and surface stresses are present. The statistical treatment of the inhomogeneity of the machined alloy gives a result in agreement with experiment. (DLC)
