Optical spectroscopy of homonuclear ion-atom collisions. Ne/sup +/ + Ne

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., A; (United States)

Inelastic collisional processes of the Ne/sup +/ + Ne system have been examined by studying the emission of spectral lines in the range between 360 and 7200 A at impact energies from 30 eV to 7 keV. Thresholds and emission cross sections for lines which originate from several excited configurations have been determined for both Ne I (2p/sup 5/3s, 2p/sup 5/3p) and Ne II (2p/sup 4/3s, 2p/sup 4/3p). The production of Ne I lines is primarily the result of single-electron excitation, and the most strongly excited configuration is 2p/sup 5/3s. The threshold for this reaction, 23.5 +- 1 eV, is in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations. The apparent dominance of excitation of the 2p/sup 5/3s configuration differs from the results observed by measuring the energy loss of scattered ions. It is suggested that this difference may be due to disparities in the cross sections for direct excitation and for charge exchange into excited states. Excitation of Ne II seems to occur in two-electron processes with simultaneous ionization of the target atoms. Low-intensity lines of Ne III are also observed. (AIP)
