An overview of some of the important works on understanding the movement of spilled oil is presented. Works on four distinct modes of oil--water interaction are recognized: spreading, drift, diffusion, and dissipation. About 230 references are included, citing information on movement of oil slicks; oil pollution; detection of oil slicks; containment and cleanup of oil spills; and the degradation of oil spills.
