A well-logging tool detects naturally occurring gamma rays in addition to the radiation produced by the bombardment of nearby formations with a radioactive source. The frequency of the usual amplitude reference pulses, generated to calibrate the system, is a sum of the output frequency of a downhole oscillator (approximately equal to 100 Hz) and the frequency of the naturally occurring gamma radiation.
