Lichen (Parmelia conspersa) surviving with elevated concentrations of lead and copper in the center of Sendai City

Lichen flora surveillance showed four species (PARMELIA TINCTORUM, P. CAPARATA, P. RETICULATA, AND P. CLAVULIFERA) to be absent and only one species, P. CONSPERSA, to be occasionally found in the center of Sendai city. Lead and copper concentrations in P. CONSPERSA increased in the densely populated areas of the city, and decreased reciprocally with the distance from the center of the city. Elevated concentrations of lead and copper in the survived lichen may be the result of air pollution originating from aggregated human population, especially by automobile driving. (ND)
