Polarization of cosmic OH masers

A mechanism is proposed for enhancing one of the circularly polarized Zeeman components of 1665- and 1667-MHz OH maser radiation. In a medium with a small velocity gradient of approx. =0.2 km sec/sup -1/ a.u./sup -1/ and a field strength Happrox. =5 x 10/sup -3/G, the spins of the OH molecues will be slightly polarized because of polarization pumping by infrared-line wings. Other factors that might enhance one Zeeman-component mode are discussed. Evidence based on observational analysis is given for a Zeeman interpretation of the circular polarization of OH maser emission. (AIP)
