It is noted that the determination and refinement of wave functions by reference to experimental data is one of the most important problems in solid state physics and chemistry. Problems encountered in the determination of the radial part of the wave functions of multielectron ions (atoms) by means of reference to x-ray diffraction data are circumvented chiefly by obtaining the experimental scattering powers in terms of the Patterson function.
