Experimental and theoretical work on extensive air showers generated by primary particles with energies in the range 10/sup 15/-10/sup 17/ eV is reviewed. Problems involved in studying the altitude profile of extensive air showers, cascade curves in the atmosphere, and the spatial distributions of the electron and muon components are discussed. 13 figures, 56 references.
