A technical assessment of reactant systems that can be utilized in place of hydrogen or deuterium and fluorine in a combustion-driven HF/DF chemical laser system is presented. Reactant systems were chosen on the basis of (1) reaction energetics, (2) formation of high concentrations of F atoms, and (3) low concentration of species known to be deactivators of the lasing process. Each system was further evaluated on the basis of deactivation kinetics, chemical, physical and physiological characteristics, and system compatibility. Results are presented indicating that there are numerous reactant candidates available to the HF/DF chemical laser system to replace those currently used.
