Experimental studies of superconducting weak links

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7347364
The principal contribution of this thesis has been to show that superconducting weak-link current-phase relations are generally not the simple sinusoids predicted by Josephson for a tunnel junction; instead it has been shown that there is a great variety of current-phase relations to be found in different types of weak links. The first measurements were made on an oxidized niobium point contact. A sinusoidal current-phase relation was found. Measured fluxoid transition distributions were in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions of Kurkijarvi. In uniform thickness tin bridges, the first distinctly non-sinusoidal current-phase relations was found. Scribed indium bridges were also examined in which the electrodes are thicker than the bridges. (GRA)
