Effects of thermal effluent on the American oyster 'Crassostrea virginica' gmelin in Indian River Bay, Delaware
The report was undertaken in order to determine some of the effects of the thermal discharge from the Delmarva Power and Light Company plant at Millsboro, Del., on the American oyster, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin), placed in Indian River Bay. The objectives of the project were to trace the survivorship, growth, condition, and reproductive behavior of oysters held in the thermal effluent and at control stations. The samples were taken from August 1970 to May 1971. The heated effluent had the effect of shortening and modifying the severity of the winter, thereby increasing the growing season. The study showed that the thermal effluent has both beneficial and detrimental effects depending on the season. (GRA)
