Economic impact and geopolitical implications of giant petroleum fields

Journal Article · · Am. Sci.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7346457

An analysis of the known distribution and probable sites of undiscovered giant petroleum fields indicates that a majority of the known fields are in the USSR, the Middle East, and North Africa and these are the areas where new giants will most probably be discovered. The implications of these factors for highly industrialized petroleum-dependent nations and for developing nations with little or no petroleum reserves are discussed to emphasize the importance of developing alternative forms of energy.
