Spin reorientation in NdCo/sub 5/ single crystals
A magnetic study was done precisely on single crystals of NdCo/sub 5/ from a standpoint of the spin reorientation (SR). The easy axis rotates continuously from the b-axis (10.0) at lower SR temperature (T/sub SR1/ at 245/sup 0/K) to the c-axis (00.1) at upper SR temperature (T/sub SR2/ at 285/sup 0/K) in the bc-plane. The temperature variations of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants K/sub 1/, K/sub 2/, and K/sub 4/ determined precisely from the magnetization and torque curves show that K/sub 1/ changes its sign from negative to positive just at T/sub SR2/ and K/sub 2/ from positive to negative at a little higher temperature than T/sub SR2/, but that (K/sub 1/ + 2K/sub 2/) reverses its sign exactly at T/sub SR1/. Further, it is found that the anisotropy constant in the basal plane K/sub 4/ vanishes near T/sub SR2/, though it is fairly large (approximately 10/sup 7/ erg/cm/sup 3/) at low temperatures. On account of this anisotropy change, the magnetization curve along the a-axis (11.0) has a peak at a temperature slightly higher than T/sub SR1/ when effective field of more than 10 kOe is applied.
