Fabrication of HgI/sub 2/ nuclear detectors

Conference ·
OSTI ID:7345259

Methods of material purification and crystal growth of mercuric iodide (HgI/sub 2/), plus preparation and characterization of nuclear detectors fabricated from HgI/sub 2/ crystals, are reviewed. The state of the art of HgI/sub 2/ nuclear detector fabrication is assessed. The use of HgI/sub 2/ to detect low energy x rays of about 2 keV and its potential use for high energy gamma-ray detection of up to 662 keV, as seen from some preliminary /sup 137/Cs gamma spectra, is discussed.
