Radial profiles of the emission from upper- and lower-laser-level atoms (Ne 3s/sub 2/ and 2p/sub 4/, respectively) have been investigated in a He-Ne laser. The obtained profiles of emission from Ne 3s/sub 2/-level atoms are appreciably broader than the zero-order Bessel function profile. Change in the radial profiles of population inversion brought about by lasing action have also been investigated and a significant dip in the tube center is observed. (AIP)
