An interactive computer program was written to simulate the formation of photochemical smog under a variety of conditions. It was used in environmental chemistry courses as an example of modelling, as a vehicle for teaching chemical dynamics, and as a demonstration of some of the factors which affect the production of smog. It was written primarily for students majoring outside the natural sciences, but has also been used successfully with beginning chemistry and biology majors. The basis of the program is a 15 reaction simplified photochemical smog mechanism proposed by Hecht and Seinfeld. Input includes the selection of one of three hydrocarbons (propylene, isobutylene, and n-butane), the rate constants and stoichiometric coefficients appropriate for the chosen hydrocarbon, either sunny or cloudy conditions, and the starting concentrations of nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and the hydrocarbon.
