Standard method of test for equilibrium moisture of coal at 96 to 97 percent relative humidity and 30 C

A method is described for the determination of equilibrium moisture of coal in an atmosphere over a saturated solution of potassium sulfate at 30/sup 0/C. A large sample of crushed coal is equilibrated with recently boiled, cooled, distilled water. After the excess water is removed from the sample, an aliquot of the large sample is placed in a weighing bottle of known weight. The coal is equilibrated with a saturated solution of potassium sulfate at 30 mm Hg in a constant temperature water bath or an insulated cabinet maintained at 30 +- 2/sup 0/C for 48 h for all coals higher in rank than lignite which will require 72 h to reach equilibrium. After equilibration, the pressure in the dessicator is returned to atmospheric pressure by the introduction of predried air with the dessicator still in the bath. The weighing bottle is quickly removed from the dessicator, capped, and weighed. The equilibrated coal is then dried at 105/sup 0/C, reweighed, and the percentage of weight loss (to the nearest 0.1 percent) is reported as equilibrium or bed moisture. (BLM)
