Several electrochemical impregnation techniques for deposition of active nickel hydroxide inside nickel sinters were investigated. The most favorable means of impregnation appears to be deposition from alcoholic nitrate solutions. Formation cycling of electrodes made from the various techniques has been performed using 20 to 50% overcharge for 10 to 30 cycles. Some electrodes show capacities as high as 9.5 ampere-hours per cubic inch after these cycles. The alcohol process has been scaled to pilot production, and several 20 to 25-AH vented nickel--cadmium cells were constructed using cadmium electrodes fabricated from another electrochemical technique. These cells show vastly improved charge acceptance, at a wide temperature range, over state-of-the-art vented aircraft cells and improved cycle life at high temperatures and deep depths of discharge.
