Standard method of test for radionuclides of radium in water. [/sup 223/Ra, /sup 224/Ra, and /sup 226/Ra, precipitation and alpha-counting]
The separation and determination of dissolved Ra in water is described. Due to the choice of detector, the method is limited to ..cap alpha..-emitting isotopes. The lower limit of detection of the method is 1 pCi/l. Ra is separated from water by coprecipitation with mixed barium and lead sulfates. After the precipitate is washed with HNO/sub 3/, it is dissolved in EDTA; and the Ba and Ra sulfates are reprecipitated by the addition of acetic acid to separate them from Pb and other radionuclides. The precipitate is dried on a plate, weighed for determination of chemical yield, and ..cap alpha..-counted to determine the total disintegrations of Ra isotopes, generally /sup 223/Ra, /sup 224/Ra, and /sup 226/Ra. Since /sup 224/Ra does not usually occur with the other two, /sup 223/Ra may be determined by difference if /sup 226/Ra has been determined separately. If, on the other hand, the total amounts of /sup 223/Ra and /sup 226/Ra are low, /sup 224/Ra may be determined directly. The precision of the method for a single operator is about 5 percent. (BLM)
