Use of electron linear accelerators in medical radiation therapy. Overview report No. 1. physical characteristics. Technical report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7342719
The report is the first of a series of four overview reports prepared during the course of study regarding the use of electron linear accelerators in radiation therapy. The purpose of the study was to provide a data base which will assist BRH to decide whether the development of a performance standard concerning the radiation safety of medical linear accelerators is necessary, and if so, the priority which should be assigned to such a standard. The purpose of this report is to present an overview of the physical characteristics of electron linear accelerators used in medical radiation therapy. Particular attention is given to those physical characteristics and performance parameters which are related to delivery of a useful properly controlled prescription dose of radiation to the patient and to delivery of a potentially harmful dose of radiation to the patient, machine operator or others in the vicinity of the accelerator.
