New deepwater diving techniques aid offshore pipelining operations

Conference · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7341829
Saipem S.p.A., Milan, has developed its own diving group for special diving support for deepwater pipelining, solving many physiological and technological problems. Problems considered include pressure and its direct and mechanical effect due to the increase of the partial pressure of breathing gases. Saipem expects to be able to handle normal diving operations to a depth of 650 ft. Tasks include recovering a buckled pipe, inserting hydraulic heads, and connecting pulling cables. Beyond this depth, semiautomatic systems controlled by submarines with manipulators are being prepared.
