Measuring diesel exhaust odor

Journal Article · · Automot. Eng. (N.Y.); (United States)

A technique using the human nose as a testing device was used to quantify odors from diesel engines. Odors were assessed in pairs, one from a reference engine running at a constant condition, and the other from a variable engine. Results are given for odor dependence on engine speed, load, fuel type, injection timing, nozzle opening pressure, air inlet temperature, coolant temperature, exhaust catalyst, and compression ratio.
