Results of research toward the development of a solid regenerable sorbent for the removal of sulfur from hot (1000 to 1500/sup 0/F) producer gases are discussed. Powdered iron oxide and fly ash mixed with a suitable binder, extruded into /sup 1///sub 4/-in. by /sup 3///sub 4/-in. cylinders and sintered, provided a solid sorbent with good physical strength and absorption capacity for hydrogen sulfide, while withstanding temperatures to 1500/sup 0/F without harm. Physical strength of the sorbent was increased without reducing absorption capacity when either bentonite or sodium silicate was used as a binder. Optimum sintering conditions were 1800/sup 0/F for 30 min. in an oxidizing atmosphere. The maximum amount of iron oxide that could be added to the fly ash-iron oxide sorbent was 25 percent because of the surface area and heat resistance of the support material. Tests using 1500 scfh of raw producer gas showed that tars and particulates in the producer gases did not cause any ill effects to the sorbents as long as the temperature in the absorbed bed was maintained above 1000/sup 0/F. Buildup of carbonaceous material during absorption was burned out during regeneration of the sulfided sorbents. Regeneration of the sulfided sorbents was accomplished by passing air through the sorbent bed returning the FeS.FeS/sub 2/ to Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and producing an 11 to 12 percent SO/sub 2/ concentration in the effluent gas. Temperatures reached 2000/sup 0/F momentarily while the highly exothermic reaction was taking place. Using air diluted with nitrogen reduced these temperatures to 1500-1600/sup 0/F thus protecting the life expectancy of the sorbent although the time required for regeneration was increased and SO/sub 2/ concentration was decreased.
