Catch the wind: a book of windmills and windpower

Book ·
OSTI ID:7339741
After citing the present energy shortage as a reason for increased development of wind power, an early history of wind power, windmills in Holland, and wind power in the U.S. and the rest of the world are discussed. It is estimated that in the U.S., by the year 2000, 5 to 10 percent of electricity (1.5 trillion kWh) annually could be supplied by wind power. In the U.S., plans are being made to examine modern versions of windmills at sizes that generate 100 kW for small communities or farm cooperatives and up to 3 MW for possible connection into the power networks of large utility companies. In Europe, of the 30,000 windmills operating in the late 19th century, only a few thousand are operating presently. But Europe is joining the U.S. by planning to increase its investigations into the potential of wind power. (MCW)
